Þessi bréf eru ástarbréf og eiga engan sinn líka í íslenskum bókmenntum. Enda eru þau varðveitt fyrir undarlega tilviljun, eins og glöggt kemur fram í inngangi Indriða G. Þorsteinssonar fyrir bókinni.
Og þessi bréf segja ástarsögu sem er bæði falleg og fagurlega skráð. Og sú saga á vafalaust eftir að valda lesendum ýmsum heilabrotum.
Sóla og Þórbergur unnust hugástum, það sjáum við glöggt af bréfunum. En hvers vegna auðnaðist þeim ekki að njótast? „Bagga mín. Þetta er svo löng saga,“ sagði Sóla við Guðbjörgu dóttur sína, þegar hún gekk á hana um sambandsslitin. Að öðru leyti er málið hulið þögn af hennar hálfu.
Guðbjörg er dóttir Sólrúnar og Þórbergs og hafa báðir foreldrar hennar skilið eftir yfirlýsingar því til staðfestingar. En hún hefur ekki fengið það viðurkennt af dómstólum. Eru þau undarlegu mál skýrð hér og rakin í inngangi fyrir bréfunum og málsskjöl og dómsniðurstöður birtar í bókarlok.
Jón Leifs: Líf í tónum
1.290 kr.Tónskáldið Jón Leifs var einn merkasti og óvenjulegasti listamaður okkar á 20. öld. Í miðri heimsstyrjöldinni fyrri sigldi hann til Þýskalands, aðeins sautján ára gamall, staðráðinn í að leggja tónlistina fyrir sig þótt ekki hefði hann nema óljósan grun um hvað í því fælist. Hann kvæntist konu af gyðingaættum en bjó þó í Þýskalandi fram til ársins 1944, fluttist þá til Svíþjóðar þar sem ný ást og stór harmur biðu hans, og þaðan aftur heim til Íslands – í annars konar stríð og á vit enn nýrrar ástar.
Saga hans er saga manns sem var of stór fyrir Ísland þess tíma – stórbrotinn metnaður hans og bjargföst trú á heilaga köllun í tónlistinni varð honum bæði gæfa og ógæfa. Jón var um margt langt á undan sinni samtíð, varð fyrstur Íslendinga til að stjórna fullskipaðri sinfóníuhljómsveit, hljóðritaði íslensk þjóðlög þegar þau voru einskis metin, stofnaði STEF og samdi tónlist sem mörgum þótti óþolandi hávaði en er nú talin með því merkasta sem gert hefur verið í íslenskri tónlist fyrr og síðar.
Árni Heimir Ingólfsson skráir lífshlaup Jóns Leifs í þessari dramatísku ævisögu og hefur velt við hverjum steini í leit sinni að heimildum um líf hans. Bók hans er einstakur lykill að lífi þessa umdeilda listamanns. Fjölda áður óbirtra ljósmynda er að finna í bókinni.

Vissulega má deila um það hvenær ef nokkurn tíma tiltekið skáld standi frammi fyrir þessu átakamikla og oft á tíðum ósjálfráða uppgjöri við sjálft sig og listina, og reyndar hafa skriflegar vangaveltur af þessu tagi orðið eins konar atvinnugrein í ýmsum stærri menningarsamfélögum.
Einmitt í þessum sporum, þó að honum hafi ef til vill ekki verið það fyllilega ljóst, stóð Kristján Karlsson að loknu öndvegisverki sínu, New York. Verk hans voru orðin svo flókin og samtvinnuð þar sem hvert kvæði vitnaði til annarra á ótal vegu að hann var kominn að ystu mörkum almenns skilnings og átti á hættu að útiloka allt nema eigin hugarheim frá veröld kvæðanna einmitt vegna þess hve stórtæk og djúp skynjun hans var orðin. Nokkur kvæðanna í New York höfðu þegar birst sem sjálfstæðar nærmyndir í bók frá 1981 og hinn mikli bálkur um stórborgina var ekki annað en eðlileg útlistun og víkkun kjarnans. En varla voru menn búnir að átta sig á efnistökum skáldsins þegar út var komið annað safn, Kvæði 84, sem virðist að minnsta kosti fljótt á litið marka þáttaskil á skáldferli Kristjáns.“
