Hann lýsir þessu fólki með raunsönnum og eftirminnilegum hætti en sagan er þó ekki síður óður til rússneskrar náttúru – birkiskóganna og sveitarinnar.
Þegar bókin kom út árið 1852 var Túrgenev handtekinn og sendur í útlegð á ættaróðal sitt. Bókin er þó sögð hafa haft mikil áhrif á Aleksander II. Rússakeisara en það var hann sem steig loks það afdrifaríka skref að aflétta bændaánauðinni árið 1861.
